Jeff and Stuart met on the Erewash canal at Sandiacre and decided to press on southwards towards Long Eaton and leave the stretch to the north between Pastures Lock and Sandiacre (unfinished on the last workday) until the return journey. On the first stretch, to Sandiacre Lock, Stuart concentrated on trimming back the overhanging vegetation with his shears whilst Jeff did the litterpicking which was found to be very light. In fact this was the case all the way to Asda at Long Eaton which was reached at about 11 am. We then retraced our wheels and finished off the section between Sandiacre and Pastures Lock - again the litter was pleasingly light - and the Workday finished at about 11.45am.
In conclusion, the Autumn 2015 workdays were blessed with relatively low levels of litter. This seems to be a growing trend over the last year or so. There are the usual hotspots at the northern end of the Trail in the Heanor/Marlpool area but generally there is a noticeable improvement. Whether this is due to a change in human behaviour or more likely other agencies are doing some litter picking.
