Birmingham Canals

30 September 2011

Martin Read led an excellent ride around the towpaths of Birmingham. Around 11 of us met at the Star City car park where we topped up our caffeine intake at McDonalds berfore the ride. We then realised that the vast car park had a clamping policy for anyone parking and leaving the site. So, with a bit of negotiation with the management at the nearby Fort Shopping Centre we were able to to leave our cars in the staff car park with no worries of being clamped.

The ride started at Salford Junction. We the rode west on the Tame Valley Canal and then followed the loops around Walsall and Wolverhampton and then back through the Gas Street Basin into central Birmingham. We stopped on route at the Navigation pub for a well earned break (beer and other drinks very cheap). Total distance 44 miles.

It was a very hot day (the cold beer was very welcome) but with very interesting canal scenery and being relatively flat, made it all very worthwhile.

Hopefully a couple of pictures to follow.
