

This was the scene last Saturday morning; not a bad turnout. At the moment, water can flow between the two sides of the bridge through two culverts, which you can see behind the guys in the boat. When these are opened up at some future date, the bridge itself would be too low to permit boats to pass under it. The roadworks of the new dual carriageway A46 are a stone's throw from this bridge and could easily incorporate the necessary work to the bridge, at a tiny extra cost to the contractor. I cycled the towpath towards the bridge where the new A46 will go over the canal. Not surprisingly, you can only go so far: the contractor has closed the path because of the works. You can see a lock chamber behind the fences. This is the third in a flight of locks from Mann's Bridge. (bottom picture).
