A MURMURATION OF STARLINGS

The Newark Ranger group has invited us to Langford Lowfields RSPB reserve, Notts (GR: SK821601) on Sunday 11 Dec to witness (all being well) the amazing acrobatic display of starlings known as a murmuration: a spectacular flight of many thousands of birds prior to their evening roost, often to be seen at this time of year.
This link will tell you more about the phenomenon: http://www.rspb.org.uk/wildlife/birdguide/name/s/starling/roosting.aspx
The warden Paul Bennett will take us onto the reserve for the best views.
There will be two rides organized by the Newark Rangers on that day:
(1) Direct ride. Meet at Grove Sports Centre, Newark at 1330 to aim at getting to the RSPB reserve by about 1430. Paul will join us at the Grove;
(2) Longer ride. Meet at Grove Sports Centre at 12 00 midday for a ride through Stapleford Woods to the Tea Rooms near Collingham and then on to Langford for about 1430.
We’ll all come back to Grove the same way. We should be back by 1700 at the latest, maybe earlier, depending on how long we stay on the reserve (and the weather of course!)

  1. This ride has been cancelled due to poor weather forecast and lack of starlings!
