Firstly, details of our next Nutbrook Trail workday: meet Thurs 5 April at 10:00 at Sandiacre Leisure Center (Nursery Avenue, NG10 5AE). Apologies for earlier post saying Thurs 4 April - there is no such date! We will collect some Ilkeston cycling maps for distribution later. We shall also be meeting James Lowe, a full-time manager from Sustrans regional office at Nottingham University for a bit of a chat. We will do some signing where appropriate, but otherwise make our way up the Erewash Canal to the Bennerley Viaduct.
There will be more workdays in April. Keep an eye on this blog.
Now some news of our ride last Wednesday:
Following our March signing days, three of us had a successful ride in the Peak District last Wednesday (28 March). Meeting at Parsley Hay, we headed north on the High Peak Trail (old LNWR trackbed) as far as Dowlow. Here a fence stops you continuing in this direction because the trackbed becomes a live mineral line serving local quarries. Instead, National Cycle Route 68 (for this is what we were on) turns left and, after about a km, runs over quiet roads to Earl Sterndale. Soon after this village, NCR68 left us and we continued on part of Peak Cycle Links' proposed route to Buxton. This was a gentle climb on another quiet road which eventually took us past a large quarry and on to the Buxton Speedway. Although not part of the proposed PCL route, we found a bridleway on the right which led to Health and Safety Executive property and the continuation of the trackbed of the Cromford and High Peak Railway line. This is now a road and we rode this to Ladmanlow (see post for 20 Mar). To finish our ride we found a way into Buxton Country Park and followed this and minor residential roads to Buxton. The weather had been kind to us throughout the ride and those of us who were returning to Parsley Hay, or in my case home, had a NW wind at our backs all the way! A good ride, taking in once again some lovely Derbyshire countryside.
