The Erewash Canal has footfall Counters located along its length to register the volume of pedestrian and cyclist traffic. There is one at the northern end of the canal at Langley Mill, one at Sandiacre next to the Derby Road bridge and two at Trent Lock - one near the Steamboat Inn an one adjacent to the Trent Lock Inn. They are owned and maintained by CRT and Sustrans Erewash Valley Volunteers Rangers have an agreement to read and record the counters on a regular basis. The information is made available to CRT, Local Councils and Sustrans - and anyone who has a need.
The Counters are powered by 12v lantern batteries with a life of approx. 2 years. Recently, it was noticed that the batteries were failing and CRT were informed but it was perceived that there would be some delay before new batteries were fitted, based on previous experience. Sustrans Volunteer Ranger, Brian Goss, did some investigation and with the blessing of Sustrans obtained a supply of new batteries which today were successfully fitted to all four Counters. It should be noted that Brian had difficulty finding a suitable 12v battery and so he has procured two 6v batteries which he has wired in series with jumper leads. Well done Brian!!
That's great that you guys are still doing these readings. I'm sure the figures show that the EVT is well used! And well done Brian for being pro-active about putting new batteries in!
