Midland canal tour June 2010

The intrepid 6 at Shardlow on first leg of their canal tour, 5 days staying at B and Bs. From left to right - John, Jan, Bob, Joyce, Martin, Sarah.

Starting off from Nottingham to Shardlow, then on to Great Haywood on Trent and Mersey canal, down Staffs and Worcester to Kinver, Stourbridge canal to Dudley, Gas Street Basin through Birmingham City centre, Grand Union overnighting Preston Baggott, Warwickshire, then to Long Buckby, Northants and back to Nottingham from Market Harborough on the train.

Daily visits to tea shops were compulsory and the trip was not without incident including a few punctures and a swim in the canal for Joyce on the homeward leg from Nottingham station! About 240 miles over 5 rainy days but a good time was had by all. Thanks to Martin for putting it all together again, looking forward to next year for our 5th adventure!

  1. Sounds great, Joyce! And you fell in the canal in Nottingham city center and lived to tell the tale? Blimey! Is it deep? Did the bike go in too?
I've ridden the towpaths of several canals of the BCN (I've done a few in a boat)but tell me, did you go thru the Netherton Tunnel? This is something I'd still like to do but am worried that the towpaths might be inhabited by ne'er-do-wells waiting to mug me!
