First of all, our Fresh Air Miles ride from Langley Mill, to celebrate the 15th anniversary of the National Cycle Network, on the evening of Wed 15 Sep, was a great success despite poor weather. Our friends from the Chain Gang enjoyed this route, which was new to them. During the ride, we had a look at the Bennerley Viaduct (see Stuart's post in July: http://erewashvalleyrangers.blogspot.com/2010/07/bennerley-viaduct-sustrans-visit-on.html )I rode the Erewash Canal towpath last Wednesday, and can report that it has now been tarmacked and had its final dressing applied all the way from Trent Lock to Mill Lane bridge, Sandiacre. I think it is superb! The section north from there will be tarmacked as far as Pastures Lock by today (Fri 24 Sep), employees of Squires, the contractors, told me. Moreover, money has just become available to do up as far as Stanton Lock in the near future. It seems that this is how the project progresses: a little more funding appears from somewhere and a bit more path gets done. Long may it continue – all the way to Langley Mill!
I also looked at the link path to Route 6 from Crown Farm Way, Mansfield, which we trimmed last autumn (http://erewashvalleyrangers.blogspot.com/2009/10/clipstone-forest-workday.html ) The vegetation is frankly not that bad; worst is at the roundabout end. However, the surface is potholed and these holes are more or less full of muddy water, making the ride in the rainy season very unpleasant. The good news is that Mansfield DC has responsibility for this path and it is on their work schedule, and the work “will be done within the next month.” Do please keep an eye on this if you are out that way.
Kay has checked out the Linby Trail, which we had been told was also in an overgrown state, but it would appear that Notts CC, who are responsible for this, have done some work there recently. Kay reports that it is quite passable.
